Little About Vitamins & Minerals
Vitamins & minerals are complex chemical substances, which perform various roles in the body. They shore up the bones, strengthen the immune system, and quickly heal wounds. They help the body to break down & use basic elements of food, carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. There are also certain vitamins, which help produce blood cells, genetic material, hormones, & chemicals in the nervous system. Unlike proteins, fats, and carbohydrates; vitamins & minerals don’t provide calories to the body; however they enable the body to use the energy from food. Sometimes, the essential nutrients needed by the body are not available in the food you eat. This is when the need of supplements arises. According to Canada’s Food Guide, people in their late 40’s or above should make vitamin D supplements a part of their daily diet. Even youngsters and adults need supplements to get proper nutrition. Those who are strict vegetarians and do not consume animal products (eggs, milk, meat, cheese, etc) must take supplements containing vitamin D, vitamins B12, calcium, zinc, and iron. Older adults also need multi-vitamin supplements if they have a poor diet or are unable to eat certain foods. To meet different body needs, vitamin and mineral supplements are available in a huge variety.
